10 Guiding Principles
As directed by the SUPPORT Act of 2018, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) published 10 guiding principles for recovery residence best practices:
- Have a clear operational definition
- Recognize that a substance use disorder is a chronic condition requiring a range of recovery supports
- Recognize that co-occurring mental disorders often accompany substance-use disorders
- Assess applicant (potential resident) needs and the appropriateness of the residence to meet these needs
- Promote and use evidence-based practices
- Written policies, procedures, and resident expectations
- Ensures quality, integrity, and resident safety
- Learn and Practice Cultural Competence
- Maintain ongoing communication with interested parties and care specialists
- Evaluate program effectiveness and resident success
