To gain a general understanding of what policies and regulations impact a recovery residence, you have to explore to what degree it is sited at the intersection of recovery supportive services, housing, and/or treatment. The National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) has identified four types, known as Levels of Support, plotted across the Venn diagram below. Whereas Level Is and IIs are most easily recognized as housing and recovery support, Level IVs combine all three elements: housing, recovery support, and treatment services.
